KALLEN - Dr. Arnold Milton, of Livingston (formerly of Newark), died of Parkinson's Disease Nov. 23 in Bala Cynwyd, Pa., at 92. Son of Zigmund and Celia Katz, Dr. Kallen was married 68 yrs to his beloved Jessica Yvonne (Eppston) Kallen, 1912-2001. Beloved father of Ronald, Roland, Lowell, Russell, Laurel, Karen, and Deborah, Arnold Kallen also leaves 12 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. He was a graduate of South Side H.S., the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons in Scotland, the Menninger Sch. of Psychiatry, and the N.Y. Psychoanalytic Inst., and a diplomate of the Am. Bd. of Psychiatry and Neurology. Committed to preserving human rights and liberties, Dr. Kallen volunteered with the first British Medical Unit of the Int'l Brigades in Granen, Spain in the Republican gov't's struggle against Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Dr. Kallen is a WWII veteran and a retired U.S. Air Force Reserve colonel. Dedicated to the provision of community mental health svces, he was dir. of the Essex Cty Guidance Ctr (1961-1969) and sup't and med. dir. of the Essex Cty Hosp. Ctr (1969-1972). A.M. Kallen served as associate prof. of psychiatry at the N.J. College of Medicine and Dentistry from 1973 to 1982, becoming prof. emeritus in 1982. He was also pres. of the N.J. Psychiatric Ass'n (1963-64) and a member of the Men's Club of Temple B'nai Abraham. Dr. Kallen's cherished legacy comprises love for family, passion for nature, science, art, Jewish heritage, and the world's diverse cultures, a staunch commitment to public service, and the courage to act in accordance with one's ethical values. Funeral services have been held. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson Study Group, the Amer.
